Continuing Education Requirements for Licensed Insurance Professionals
Stay Compliant. Stay Licensed. Stay Ahead.
CE requirements keep your license active and your knowledge current. Mosaic Continuing Education delivers state-approved training so you meet your obligations and grow professionally.
Quick Facts
- • CEUs represent approved training hours (≈50 minutes per CEU)
- • Ethics minimum: typically 1–6 hrs (check your state)
- • Reporting: providers report completions to state systems (up to 30 days)
What Are CEUs (Continuing Education Units)?
Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are state-mandated training hours insurance professionals must complete to maintain active licenses. These hours ensure agents, adjusters, and producers stay current with evolving laws, regulations, and ethical standards that protect consumers. Each CEU typically represents 50 minutes of approved instruction through a state-approved provider such as Mosaic Continuing Education.
Why Continuing Education Matters
The insurance industry changes constantly — new legislation, updated underwriting guidelines, emerging products, and revised ethical standards. Continuing education isn’t just a rule; it’s how you:
- Stay compliant with your state’s Department of Insurance
- Maintain your professional credibility
- Expand your expertise and product knowledge
- Protect your clients and your business
Skipping CE requirements can cost you more than a renewal fee.
How to Track Your CE Hours (via Sircon)
Sircon is the official compliance and licensing platform that helps insurance professionals monitor CE progress. You can view, verify, and download your CE transcript anytime through the Sircon website. Once logged in, you can:
- View how many CE hours you’ve completed and what’s still required
- Confirm your ethics-hour status (minimum 3 required in many states)
- Verify courses reported by your provider
- Check your license expiration and renewal deadlines
- Download or print your CE Transcript as proof of completion
Tip: It may take up to 30 days for CE providers to report course completions to Sircon, so always complete your hours well before your renewal date.
Consequences of Non-Compliance
Failing to meet your CE requirements can lead to serious repercussions, including:
- License suspension or termination
- Fines and reinstatement penalties
- Loss of commissions while inactive
- Permanent record of non-compliance in state databases
Example: In Texas, failure to complete CE hours before your renewal date can result in a $50 fine per missing hour and temporary loss of good standing with the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI).
Understanding Reciprocity
Reciprocity allows licensed professionals in one state to apply for a non-resident license in another state without re-taking the state exam — but reciprocity for licensing does not always include reciprocity for continuing education. You may still need to meet your home state’s CE requirements to keep multiple licenses active.
Example: A Texas adjuster licensed in Louisiana can apply for a Louisiana non-resident license through reciprocity, but must still complete their Texas CE hours to keep both licenses in good standing.
How to Stay Compliant
- Know your renewal cycle (most states renew every two years).
- Track your CE hours early — don’t wait until renewal month.
- Verify provider approval — only state-approved providers count.
- Keep proof of completion — save certificates for at least four years.
- Stay informed — subscribe to your state’s Department of Insurance updates or our newsletter.

Non-Reciprocal States
Several states do not offer full reciprocity for licensing and/or continuing education. Notable examples include:
- California — limited recognition for adjuster/agent licenses from other states
- New York — many license types require NY-specific CE
- Hawaii — limited reciprocity; often requires in-state testing/CE
- Massachusetts — partial reciprocity, rules depend on line of authority
Note: This list is illustrative — always verify with the specific state’s insurance department.
